4.   Greek Myth:  Write your own.
The Elements of a Greek Myth

Gods/ Goddesses are central characters
Gods/Goddesses have special powers
A natural phenomenon, occurrence, or event is explained by the myth
There is usually some type of conflict
A lesson is taught or a cultural or moral value is explained through the myth
Gods and goddesses interact with mortals
Gods and goddesses play tricks on mortals and one another (sometimes)

Universal themes that run through myths:  love, beauty, power, fate, anger, jealousy, death, loyalty, danger, goodness, heroes,

Think about the ways that the Greeks used mythology to explain what they did not understand. For example, some myths explained why animals behaved in certain ways, while others tell why natural events like seasons, or weather occurred. In some myths, the gods play tricks on mortals to teach them lessons, usually about morals that were valuable to the culture. This assignment will provide you with the opportunity to write a myth of your own.

Think about some things that today are difficult to understand or things from the past that you have questions about.  Create a brainstorm list of possible topics that could be the center for a myth.(we will come together as a class and pull our ideas together).  From there, create a list of characters and a conflict that would make for a good story.  The story is a present day myth.
Brainstorm List:

Be creative in your ideas.  Create a “god” or “god(s)”/ goddess that has super power and create a story that helps to explain some current day phenomenon.

Elements to your story (fill in the box below with your ideas):
1.         Characters

2.      Setting

3.       Conflict

4.      A question or moral that the story will answer

5.      Resolution
